Hello Kitty is a global phenomenon in the shape of a cute white kitten with a bow on her left ear and a fluffy bobtail. She was created by designer Ikuko Shimizu in 1974, and named after one of Alice's cats in Lewis Carroll's book "Through the Looking Glass". Japanese teens' fascination with British culture at that time contributed to making Hello Kitty an English cat, living in suburban London. Hello Kitty is not just a pretty face though! She's got a likeable, cheerful and energetic personality with a number of hobbies, favourite things, and best friends. And if you wonder how much she weighs - simple! Same as 3 apples. She's a popular pupil at school and loves meeting new people. All these qualities have earned her the respect and love of thousands and thousands of people. After all, she is quite a celebrity!

Hello Kitty made her debut appearance on a little purse. Who would have thought that it would be the beginning of a global craze! In a response to the growing Kawaii (meaning "cute") trend in Japanese popular culture, different products featuring Hello Kitty started appearing first in Japan and soon after all around the world. Now Hello Kitty's lovely face features on a vast number of products, including wallets, watches, clothing, mineral water, cameras, portable CD players, handkerchiefs, stationery, cutlery, lunchboxes, plush toys, you name it. Mira, the Japanese car manufacturer has even built a Hello Kitty car!

Sanrio is the company behind Hello Kitty's tremendous success and every product featuring Hello Kitty requires Sanrio's approval. Other characters created and promoted by Sanrio include Keroppi, Cinnamorol and Melody but none of these has ever matched (or even come close!) to the popularity of everybody's favourite English kitten!
