The Volkswagen Golf was a benchmark family car - front wheel drive, hatchback, and clean-cut modern, at its 1974 launch. VW bosses were rightly delighted and sales soared, but the company's speed-mad engineers had also developed a 'Sport Golf'.. in their spare time and in secret. Performance, from a fuel injected 1.6 litre motor, was electric, and the Golf's
tremendous handling potential was unleashed via fat wheels and turned suspension. It was christened the GTI and unveiled in 1975. There was even some of that elusive German commodity, humour; its gear knob was jokingly shaped like a golf ball..

John Haynes wrote and published his first book, on building an Austin 7 Special, whilst he was still at school in 1956. He wrote two more ' builders' manuals while doing his National Service in the RAF. The first 'proper' Haynes Owners Workshop Manual, for the Austin Healy 'Frogeye' Sprite, was published in 1965. Based on the stripdown and rebuild of the project vehicle with an extensive use of step-by-step photographs, a process that has not changed to this day.

There are around 300 UK car manuals in print at present with 130 Plus UK motorcycle manual titles. (Not to mention equivalent ranges in the USA, France and Sweden.) Writing a car manual is no easy job, it takes 20 to 30 man-weeks. Authors work in pairs to help shorten the origination time and to avoid themselves going crazy. From the start of a project to the publication of the manual it usually takes between three to six months.
